do you have plants? If so, then generally no. However, read this article, it suggests a well thought out alternative. Also, i once used a car light and it was not very good. It turned my tank yellow! Also your fish colours will not be as bright without the propper light.

If you "must" use a standard light fitting, then get a "daylight" energy saving lamp... same size, less power, better for tank ! Power depends on tank size, and what you want to keep in there.
