I have a question, and it may seem silly, but bare with me as I am still new to planting an aquarium. In my canopy there is a piece of glass between the light fixture and the water. I get a lot of water scale build up on that glass over a very short period of time. This blocks out a lot of the light that is supposed to be going to the aquarium. I was wondering if it is safe to remove the glass, i.e. with the flourescent tubes should I be worried about a little water on them?
Thanks
Pat

I use those rippled plastic drip trays between the tank and the hood. If I can't get one to fit, I make one out of several smaller ones. The tubes are not protected in any other way. Been doing it like that for 20+ years without trouble. The close fitting drip trays also stop things jumping out, (unless you've got some real big stuff).

They cost next to nothing, so when they are beyond simple cleaning, chuck them out and get another one.
