What additional lighting would I need to be able to grow on sps frag corals in a Bayu 550tl tank?

Most corals will be able to grow in the Boyu. It depends on the exact coral. So if you list the Sps corals you want to keep here somone like Seffie or Trod will help you - as they had that tank.

You are limited to what SPS you can grow in a TL550 Monti Digi is fine high up in the tank I have some in mine doing well.

Options in the TL550 to grow SPS is to remove the hood and install a MH but it might be to much light for any current stock.

Another option I am considiring is to use LED spotlights so you illumnate 1 specfic coral this is very common with the japnese guys.

I am also looking at a total LED upgrade in the hood this would give more than enough light.

Thanks.

At present I do not have anything in the tank following transfering everything to a larger tank.

I was hoping to be able to grow on Montipora`s and Acropora frags to transfer to my main tank.

Would this be possible with the existing lighting and if not what would be the best way to upgrade it?

Thanks for any advice.

There are a few methods I can think of but there are people more knowledgable than me on SPS.

1. Take the hood off grab a 150W Metal halide on tank cheapish and easy to do but I suspect you need to watch for evaporation

2. LED self build these have produced some very good results but need a little DIY skills price wise £200 roughly

3. Aquarays LED can just be fitted in but you will need to loose hood and you might need 4 of these £800 roughly

I dot think you can get a luminaire to fit the TL550 which would be the other main option

I have seen a mod to add a 3rd light into the hood but not sure how good these results are

Only acro that might do in lower light is any of the green species..any others require strong lighting and pristene water conditions to survive, let alone grow unfortunately

Montiporas - plating and digita shoudl be ok
hysterix should be too

Acros are going to want more light though.
