Lighting Timing

What is the right amount of light the tank needs? At the moment because it is hot and I have MH I turn the lights on when I get home from work but just reaised that means they only get about 5 hours max light. Am I able to use a plug timer for Metal Halides? Was worried that it could blow them not turning them on by the switch on them.

What times should I be looking at? Say on at 4 off at 11?

I am getting some red led strips and was tempted to get blues too but woud the blues be worth it? My MH are really blue already.

Any advice is great!

How would I do it if I go for blue LED strips as well? Do they count if on n hour before and after? They probably aren't strong
