The bulb I have in right now is 9325k.
I was considering replacing it with a 4200k lamp. Would there be a disadvantage to this? I don't like the light in there now its too far to the purple side of things.

What would be a good k range and also does anyone have a breakdown on the color of light based on kelvin? i.e. 3000 is more yellow

Most hobbiest use normal tubes, range 4000-6500K. I like 6500K, it's "white", not so yellowish. It's also important how good those tubes show colours (higher Ra-index). Ra 80-89 is good, 90-99 is excellent (full spectrum).

Here is a tube test that shows how some of them shows colours etc. Test have been made by some finnish hobbiest.

e.g. "02_Philips965.jpg":

Philips965 = tube is made by philips and 9 means Ra-index 90-99 and 65 means 6500K
