I have a T-5 4 bulb fixture ( 4x55w ) going on a 110w tank ( 48x24x22 ). Going with some live plants.

I ask in a planted tank forum, which bulbs ( in combination ) would be best for a planted tank.
Giesemann Midday 6000K and Aquaflora are very good T5's.

Only problem, were talking $100 plus shipping for 4 bulbs. Needing to replace them within a year, makes me shudder.
I really want a planted tank, but the cost are starting to skyrocket ( 10bags Florite $230, $60+ a year Flourish Excell , $100 year in bulbs ), sheesh.

Can anyone here give me an equivalent bulb choice for the job, that would cost a lot less? I understand the Giesemann bulbs are top notch, but I also know there are other items in this hobby that can get the job done, and save a little money.

Hi,

Have a look at James c's site . You can see the effect of using cheaper tubes. I currently run one philips T5 HO 880 and one arcadia plant pro.... One expensive, and one cheap.

Good Luck,

Dave.

Thanx for the tip. I googled the bulbs and couldnt find anything available to USA buyers. Guess I might have to bite the bullet and pay the $100.
