Can you use a ---- 60 watt 12 ov soft white bulb ----in an aquarium? It's the kind we use in our lamps and ceiling fan.
It puts off quite a bit of heat- but if placed higher above a tank (small tank) that would take care of the heat problem right?

I'm just curious. :S

the light that you get from a bulb dosent give you the right spectrums of light that fish need or plants for that matter. you need to have a floresent tube that is designed for a fish tank.

and plus thay don't wast as much energy and thats a good thing cos ur going to have ur light on for 6-8 hrs a day or 10-12 hrs if u have plants in ur tank.

have you kept fish before and how big is ur tank and wots ur filter like.

lol- ive been keeping fish for about........15 years. Longer if ya wanna include when I was really really small.
I never got into the "technical" things. Always did it by ear so to say. Most lights I've used have been natural. (IE Sunlight)

My current tank is around five gallons- I use a whisper fall filter to move the water and strain the "big chuncks" out. ;)

Set up as a riffle system ( river/stream).
Now I'm running on sunlight. as I said- I was just curious if ya could use it. Thanks for the reply! ;)

You could use it, provided you take care of the heat problem. However, it's very inefficient. You would probably get far more light from a 9w mini-flourescent (and without the heat) than a 60w incandescent.
