I am attempting to make my own hood and I ran into a tiny problem. Wiring, I don't do wiring. If I try it either doesn't work, catches fire or knocks me on my butt.Electrical wiring and me just don't get along. Can I use regular lights such as under cabinet , shop or plant lights if I make sure no water hits them by placing a strip of plastic between them and the tank?

i wouldnt risk it if i were you, for you and your fishies sake :)

stick with proper fish tank lighting its already waterproofed and much Much safer, even with plastic inbetween things could go wrong with condensation and suck like im sure you could build in some tubes without too much issue :good:

Hmm...I have a shop light over one of my tanks. It has been for about six months and no problem. I just make sure it doesn't get any condensation on it by covering the tank very well, which also prevents the fish from jumping. The only part of the light that is exposed (not encased within the back of the fixture) is the fittings for the bulbs. I checked them just now and there has been no corrosion on them at all. I feel that it is safe. I wouldn't if moisture was getting to it but its not. Just make sure there is no chance it will come into contact with the water at any time and I believe it is fine.
