i got a topfin starter kit with the regular light bulbs and 6 tropical freshwater fish

1. do fish get annoyed b/c the light is on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Should i ever turn off the light? (electricity costs are not an issue here)

2. someone said that it'd look cool if i got a black light. would that kind of UV lightning hurt a fish's skin or disorient it?

Hi & Welcome :D

First of all, you can not leave the lights on 24 hrs a day. Apart from annoying the hell out of the fish and severley stressing them, they need to have some time without the lights blaring away. you are trying to simulate normal sunlight, so you need to also have a nightime.

secondly, i would say no to the blacklight, as aquarium lights have certain parameters such as wavelengths, etc. have you considered such lights as 'blue moon'. this is a darker light for viewing at night time.

HTH :D
