Is there a way of plugging aquarium lighting straight to the mains? or do lighting units have to be used?

Thanks

not sure I get you.

Most aquarium lights I've seen come with end caps. Either for both ends or one end. The wires lead to a box thing (the starter unit) which has a lead that plugs into the mains.

I mean is there a way to wire it strait to the mains without a starter unit? or to wire more than one bulb to 1 unit?

Flourescent lighting requires quite a big jolt to get started, no mains supply could come close, therefore it requires a ballast. I'm sure someone can provide a more detailed answer, but that is the short story.
