Lighting For A Planted Tank

I am hoping to eventually convert my 55gal to a hi-tech planted tank with presurried CO2 and ferts. I am thinking I want somewhere between 2-3 wpg, would that be good or too much. I am wondering what the best type of lighting would be. Also would it be better to build my own fixture or buy one?
