I'm looking to get back into the hobby after a long time away. Used to breed gouramis and platies. In any case, I was thinking about setting up my 75g as a decent planted aquarium to house a tank of platies, with some clown loaches and smaller Synodontis catfish.
I'd like to use a high-wattage standard flourescent setup to grow a respectable variety of plants. At the same time, I'd like to selectively breed my platties. That's why the loaches and the Synodontis cats are in there...to prevent unauthorized breeding. Carefully chosen individuals will be bred in a 10g bare-bottom tank with a box filter, which will also serve to raise the young. I'll probably also add a grow-out tank or two.
My concern is this...has anyone noticed any increase in deformed/stillborn fry when using big light rigs? I would hate to mess up a lot of careful work and planning by bombarding my fish with UV rays until the young came out stillborn. The goal is basically to get as many fry as possible so I can be as picky as possible. My culls will not be going to the Synodontis, probably to the kids in my neighborhood.
