it not so much increases the wattage but the amount of light being forced directly down into the aquarium...as I understand, the WPG calculations include a decent reflector in their measurements.
Basically 50% of the light is going in the wrong direction. A reflector will redirect that light back down into a tank. however both the material and design of the reflector are equally important.
