Hiyas :)

I am just getting my feet wet in the way of planting a tank, and would like to get some nice starter plants. I was told that java moss and ferns are very easy and only need low lighting. So do they not require any special lighting? Will an average table lamp (like coffee table lamp, not plant lamp) do for them?

Is there anything else I need to do / read before I buy some?

By the way, many of you have very beautiful tanks, I'm most impressed. :D

Thanks for your help!

Welcome Silvani

I doubt you will have success with any plants by using a standard incandesccent type lamp - these are very inefficient and the light produced is far from ideal.

The best you could expect is to just keep your plants alive, I very much doubt they would grow at all.

What size is your tank?

Bear in mind that Java ferns and mosses require attaching to wood or similar decor so you'll need some thread or nylon cord.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome!

I just have very small tanks. And I am currently fishless cycling a 6 and 5 gallon tank for future bettas.

I was hoping to get the two new little tanks planted when I got done cycling them. Perhaps just a few plants in the back corners for nice hiding spots. So I'm trying to do a bit of research now before hand.

Do they make any acceptable lighting for a tank so small?

I can be sure to get some wood or stones for them to attach to as well. That’s good to know, since was just planning to burry them in the gravel. See glad I asked!

--- edit! ---

I just found this http://shop.petsmart.com/product/253437430...24441809765.htm

I think that would fit in the lighting that the tank already has, so would something like that work?

Thanks again. :)
