I am not sure on brands but I usually see them at about 2.5 inches in diameter.

I have always found Gro-Lux tubes make the tank look dingy. True they contain the necessary red and blue ends of the spectrum that chlorophyll uses to work, but they lack the natural greens and yellows. I use full spectrum tubes.

Tritons are quite good. They stay quite bright throughout their life then fail quickly. Many tubes get slowly dimmer and dimmer. A normal tube really needs to be replaced once a year whether it has failed or not as it's light output is generally halved.

ok well in my 15 gallon tank ive gone for a powerglo and grolux, 15 watts each with refelctors, that will have to be enough, adding a plant substrate covered in sand today and a hagen co2 system when i add the plants, i will buy a good fertilizer and chose types of plants carefully, is that doesnt work its back to plastic :p
