I'd say 2-3 years. Did you know the shortest living vertebrate is a fish of similar size - an annual killifish from Mozambique and Zimbabwe called Nothobranchius furzeri, which lives for between 3 and 6 months (You may get 9 months if lucky, but it will be a gnarly old geriatric after 6)

My first fish to breed was the zebra danio, and they take several months just to get to adult size, then go for quite some time afterwards

It seems different factors affect longevity, and over feeding as a fry can, it seems, reduce lifespan. I have found when breeding groups of fish, that the quickest to grow up die first, and the slower subdominant individuals very often outlive their siblings, and become king of the tank in their twighlight years.

Gives everyone a chance to reproduce!

I had 9 zebras in an unheated 2 gallon tank, and the last one just passed away after I started the tank over 5 years ago!!!

I've had my female live for nearly 2 years now I think, the others died unfortunately :(

that is wrong
the shortest lived vertebrate is the coral reef pygmy goby Eviota sigillata which has an average lifespan of 56 days

anyways, ZD's should live for upto 6 years but 3-4 is quite often the limit in home aquaria
