I'm wondering if anyone is able to clear anything up for me quickly?

I went into my LFS today, with the intention of purchasing a few interesting Plecs/Catfish.

I left with what I thought was three Banjo Catfish and an L137 Rusty.

My fault for not being more attentive as to what the assistant was netting out of the tanks, but when I got home I noticed that one of the supposed Banjos was in fact a Tiger Plec and the Rusty Plec, to me, looks like a standard Plec?!?!

Can you confirm this for me? I will be taking the Rusty back having mentioned it the LFS just now, but I don't know if I should take the Tiger Plec back as he's a very lovely looking fella and a fish I've wanted to keep for a while.

Ideas?

Rusty Plec??? or could it be a L037?

Tiger Plec?

The tiger from the pic looks pretty much spot on... the other is a run of the mill common... often mis-named as many including a rusty red, red plec, leopard etc etc.

The common will get huge and the L002 (tiger) requires wood, you probably already know this but never hurts to makes sure :good:

Glad to have that confirmed. The common Plec has gone back to the LFS and has been replaced with a Clown Plec and a random Swordtail!

I'm chuffed with the Tiger Plec, even if I never asked for it in the first place...that mistake cost the LFS £20.

Another forum has now put forward the notion that my Tiger is not a Tiger, and may be a L397 instead - which would be even better!

Doesn't look like L397, looks more like L169

Not sure about the Tiger Plec. But it does look ok to me. Some of the L numbers are very similar. And there are often multiple L numbers for the same species.

The Rusty doesn't look right to me.
I have a Rusty and it is very different.

Btw, what lfs was this?
Where abouts in the UK?
Might be worth a visit! :hyper:

The Rusty was a common Plec in the end, much to their annoyance when I took it back! The LFS is very dimly lit, including the tanks so it was very difficult to see what was what on the first visit ...plus I was trusting the sales assistant to know what he was doing.

The LFS is in Norfolk and in Taverham to be more precise. I'm sure locals will know which one I'm on about.

On the whole, though, a very successful shopping trip! I love my new assortment of Plecs and Cats! :D

ive been to taverham its a good shop, they usually know whats going on. but yes the fish room is like a cave  i got an L204 flash plec from there, looks similar to yours.

this is my rusty plec. cost me a tenner from cherry lane in fritton, great yarmouth. think he was mispriced though, to my benefit :hey:

and heres a predictably useless photo of one of my banjos. i got my banjos from swallow aquatics at snetterton, another great shop.

I paid £10 for my Rusty.
So that must be the going rate for them. I wish the other Plecs were that cheap.

Gorgeous fish Moochy :)

I have just been to another local place and bought two Albino Plecs and a rather large, meaty Rusty :good:

It's definitely not a 397 and as sure as i can be with the pic that it's not a 169. I would for now stick with it been a tiger L002.

Are all these plecs going in the same tank?..... Out of curiosity, how big is the tank?

Two albino plecs... of which variety?

Well, I'll just content myself with the Tiger being a nice looking fish and not worrying too much about the L number.

They're all in a 250l tank, all with seperate areas specific to needs.

Not a clue what the Albino Plecs are, variety wise - Probably Chocolate. I don't mind overly either way. If they turn out to be like my old chap who was upwards of 15" I shall be rather happy.

Not meaning to sound rude but.....

You have that many plecs in a 250l, that tank wouldn't be big enough for one of the albino's if it turns out to be the common variety.

Why would you be happy if it turns out to you like your old 15 inch one?, your tank isn't big enough for a 15 inch plus plec, never mind 2 and then the rusty and what others you have on top of that and then what other stocking you have?.

You say each has there separate areas?.... do you really think that will be the case for 2 potential tank busters of 18-20 inches each alone?

Oh well.... i doubt me commenting is gonna change anything lol.

Good luck with them

Um, you haven't asked about my circumstances really, have you?

My old bruiser was in my old 8ft Oscar tank, but he died a few years back.

The current Albinos would be more than welcome in our 6ft setup and failing that, they'd go in one of our spare 4fts, should that need ever arise.

I'm not looking to argue, but you seem to have made lots of assumptions which are wrong

No, not at all.... i made no assumptions lol... i asked where are all these plecs?.. you gave an answer of a 250l... now you not giving the full details isn't my problem nor am i a mind reader... you giving only the info you gave and what you wrote led me to believe that these plecs were going to be in a tank way to small for them (no assumption there).

By me asking the initial question of where are all these plecs going?, should have given a slight inkling of where this convo was going, however you chose not to divulge quite important and relevant information which led to these further message having to have been made.

I'm not after an argument either and nor do i intend to make one out of this thread lol.

Nice to know these fish have the opportunity to be in correct sized tanks :good:
