LFS recommendation in and around Leicester

I'm sorry for posting this, I had a look at the shop directory pages, but I just wanted some proper recommendations from anyone in my area.

I'm particularly looking for guppies and even the better shops we've seen didn't seem to care too much for the guppies.

We bought our first 4 from a large shop in Syston (don't want to be libellous here), but 2 of those died of velvet within a few days. When I went back to the shop, I noticed that the guppies in their tanks also had velvet/fin rot/white spot, the works.

Anyway, since then we've looked at a few shops. There was one in a garden centre at Bristall where the guppies had nipped tails and there were lots of dead fish on the bottom and there was another on Clarendon Park Road, where again there were lots of dead fish on the bottom.

About the nicest we've seen are at Pets at Home, but they haven't got a lot of choice and they seem to sell out really quickly (especially if you want to leave it a week from the time they arrive in the shop.)

So, can anyone recommend a good LFS that's got a nice healthy stock of guppies in the Leicester area?

I can reccomend one thats not too far from leicester if you have a car. Bardills is a garden centre and is on the A52. I have had fish from their and they have all been very good. I know they stock guppys. If you are interested then from leics it is M1 to junction 25 then A52. Follow the A52 to Nottingham and its just off a big rounderbout (signposted).

No no no!! dont buy from birstall aquatics and garden centre!! evil evil shop!!

Ocean Commotion on clarendon park road is pretty good, I'm surprised you said you saw lots of dead fish on the bottom, I've never seen that in there and I go in at least a couple of times a week, but he doesnt tend to stock guppies...

Why not try Leicester Aquatics (Leicester Aquatics 332 Welford Road Leicester Leicestershire United Kingdom LE2 6EH Tel: 0116 27 0 9610) which is a few streets away from ocean commotion. Its small and not exactly gleaming and modern but ive never got a bad fish from there and on the rare occasion you may find a dead fish the guy will remove it straight away if you let him know. The front of the shop is coldwater, then if you go into the back section and around the corner, the guppies are on the left around the corner. I've had some nice males from there in the past. He also has marine and can order in fish that you want.

I ordered 3 bumble bee gobies and a fig 8 puffer through him last week, and he's setting up a brackish tank for me especially to keep them till I can go in and collect the fish (should be today!!!!)

Just dont rely 100% on his advice, he has a tendency to suggest you can keep more fish in a tank than you really can...... Also watch out for his strange opening times: shut on a monday, then 12-8pm most of the rest of the time...


Other suggestions are Coalville Aquatics (Coalville Aquatics 2a North Avenue Hugglescote Coalville Leicestershire United Kingdom LE67 3QX Tel: 01530 814449 ), they sometimes have interesting shipments like puffers, and again are clean and nice inside the tanks.

Or Clearwater aquatics (Clearwater Aquatics 338 Green Lane Road Leicester Leicestershire United Kingdom LE5 4ND Tel: 0116 27 4 3426 ). They have some fantastic marine tanks and sell gorgeous corals etc..not so many tropical fish though.

Or a bit further away is A5 aquatics, they sell lots of tanks and equipment aswell as koi, coldwater and tropical fish, and genuinely seem to know what they are talking about when giving advice.,


Theyre all the ones I go to!!


One I havnt visited yet is Wharf Aquatics in Nottingham, its meant to be amazing there but again, a bit of a drive to gte to it....

I would Also Recommend A5 Aquatics In Nuneaton, lots of tanks and Alot of Knowledge, if you ask the older guys.

They usually lots of guppies - 5 Large Tanks.
