Levels are fine?

I am not complaining or anything, but it seems weired to me because as most of you know that have helped me, all of my questions had to do with accidently putting my fish in to early without letting in cycle. But i have had it for a few weeks now and i am checking the water every week and added some salt for my mollies and everything has been perfect.

Although i have 40ppm of nitrates i am trying to grow plants from bulbs but they are still the same.

Anyways is that unusual to have no problems like that or should i anticipate something to happen soon?

plant growth depends a log on your plants, and needs a fair bit of time to grow. from experiance i have seen that my java fern grows slower than some of the other types of plants, one in perticular i had to trim down, i've had them for almost 3 months i think, i've seen that potted plants work better than bunches.

I've been advised that I keep my lights on for too long. I said I was trying to give my plants plenty of light to grow them but was told that I'd just encourage algae to grow on the leaves, choking the plants and preventing them from getting enough light.

Does that sound likely to you? I didn't know whether to believe it or not. Besides, I have 3 catfish that regularly visit the plants for a quick feed.

When i said lots of light i meant lots of watts (2.5-3+ per gal). But still only for 10-12 hours per day. Also keep the on and off times consistent this is good for both the fish and the plants. If algae occurs you can deal with it accordingly, by adding some ottos or similar or interrupting the lighting hours...leave them on for a few hours in the morning and then shut them off and then turn them on again in the evening for a few hours. This usually causes the algae to die off as it requires constant light to grow its best. HTH
