Hi Guys,

well 2 weeks ago now I got a Boyu 550 from Home Marine in Enfield I had been looking at tanks for a while and decided on the Boyu 550 havin seen the tank running before, I had just popped down to have another look at size ect and decided there and then to take one home with me.....

I asked the young chap who was mopping up if they had any in stock and he pooped off to ask the manager who came back and told me they were out of stock untill thursday, I asked if he would part with the display tank and he said he would if it was all there.... after a cheke he said I could have the tank :D I asked if there would be a discount he said I could have 10% :D off he went to get the box...... he came back and said he was looking for the box and found a boxed tank if I would rather have it still with the 10% off..... no brainer, so off I went with a brand new boyu 550 for £215.00 (no stand)

so off home to un box my new tank......

Hi Guys,

An update for you......

I went to get my live rock at the weekend when i got there (friend of a friend) the guy pointed out some rock and said you wont want that it has glass anemone on it..... I didnt know what they were and said that i would take it anyway it looked like really nice rock......

I got home and with the rock Transported in tank water and put the rock in my tank..... I then looked up "glass anemone" I was thinking what a mistake but looked up the best way to remove them..... the best way seemed to be injecting them with pure lemon juice with a syringe.....

I was a tad worried what this would do to my water so I set up another small tank with salt water and sorted the "Bad Rock" and put it in the other tank, a couple did come out on the other rock, so all week I have been injecting them with lemon juice in both tanks just a few each day so not to ruin my water..... About 12 in total.... I have to say it works a treat and kills them....

(the local chemist thinks im a junkie she gave me a pack of 20 syringes with swabs sayin she couldnt break them up....lol) free by the way,

I still have one or two to kill off..... and I have in mind to get a peppermint shrimp as I have read they eat them.....

Any way on a happier note My API salt water test kit came yesterday and I tested the water.....

High range PH was 8.... I have a buffer to raise that a bit I think it needs to be 8.2/8.4

Ammonia was 0

Nitrite was 0

Nitrate was 5.0

the live rock was from a mature tank and has been in since saturday.....

I think the nitrate has to be 0 is this correct..?? how long does that normally take to happen....the water and sand had been in a week before the rock....

any advise welcome....

thanx guys....

Paul

Hello mate

Reason for Live Rock being on glass is mainly so when something digs underneath it doesn't get squished by a rock dropping half an inch.

Your nitrate reading should be zero ideally, and I would suggest that for it to be 5 then it was either RO water that wasn't as pure as it should be, muck in the sand or most likely the rock has some nitrate in it, either its had a bit of die off (depending how long it was out of water) or the nitrate level in your mates tank was enough that the water in the pores of rock were high in Nitrates and that is where your nitrate is coming from as there isn't anything to create any nitrate in your system yet.
