I have two of these guys, they're quite small right now, only about 3 inches each, does anyone know how quickly they grow? I am hoping they get around 6-8 which is said to be typical in aquariums. I hope no bigger, otherwise I'll have to upgrade tanks again..lol

Theyre actually a very interesting fish as I used to have one. Growth rate can vary but I can tell you that they gain a new band with every year of life (you'll notice soon if not already that the band on the tail may be or soon will start splitting). I believe mine grew probably an inch a year slowing as it reached full size. Have fun with them, theyre definitely enjoyable

Thanks for the info :)

An inch a year? Not bad, so in 3 more years they should be 6 inches. They live in a 55 gallon right now, should I upgrade that if they get any bigger than 8 inches? I've heard they typically don't get much larger in aquariums. They are fun to watch, I love feeding them algae tabs and watching them 'carry' them in throughout their tank, really cute. Any suggestions for tank mates?

I have kept these. I found mine to grow exreamly quickly reaching 12" in less than 12 months. I started with three but came home to find 2 dead one day when they reached about 6". The third had become very territorial killing the other 2. It didn't seem bothered with most fish just ones of a similar body shape. They also love the taste of plants. He enjoyed eating all the plants in my 8' tank. I eventually rehomed him. Having said that I would get one again for the right set up.

woah! are you sure?? I know the person that has mine and its 5 years old in an 80 gallon and it hasnt been 12" for anymore than a year. what did you feed them and how often??

As for tankmates... DONT get anything with bright colors that cant carry itself in a semi aggresive tank. I put a 5" koi and a 4" goldfish into the tank with mine for winter and they had been picked to death within a few hours... beyond that I'd say anything that has a dull color and/or is a non community fish will be fine

He obvoiusly ate all my plants these were a good starter and then thrieved by eating a large percentage of the JMC catfish pellets intended for the synos. These deffinatly helped him pack on the pounds.
