I woke this mornig and one of my emerald crab was using an hermit crab leg as a toothpick. One of my starfish was taking the half eaten body of a hermit crab out of it's house.

I'm I doing something wrong or is this normal?

thanx

You sure it was an actual hermit crab or just a molt. Lots of invertebrates will eat crab molt :)

I really look like an hermit crab and I have a few of what it appears to be empty shells. Do they molt and then go back into their shell?

BTW I'm going to pickup another 30 lbs of live and cured live rock for 6/lbs I can't even get that online.

When my apple-sized Caribbean Hermit was molting, I didn't even notice it. However, after days of hiding (he usually will hide to consume his meals) I woke up in the morning, and he was in the front corner of the tank, apparently burying something. I noticed that his antennae were longer, and the coralline algae growing on him was now gone. He looked sparkling clean. In the substrate near him, I spotted a piece of red gravel. I moved the crab, then pulled on the red piece in the sand, and out came an amazingly complete skin that I still have.

The point is, that Hermit Crabs may hide for days while molting (their skin is soft during this time) then emerge a refreshed crab.
