I'm after some blue lights for my 6' x 2' x 2' tank, and the ones we've bought from LFS in the past have been too dim to light up that kind of depth, even when submerged. Have seen some LED sets on Ebay for @ £10-15 depending on which ones you get, and who sells them - but wondered, will they be suitable for such a big tank?

I prefer the little spotlight type ones rather than the tubes, as I only want to light up parts not blind my fish :hey:

Just wondered if anyone knew if they'd be suitable, or knew of any other (cheap) places that sell ones suitable for big tanks?

Well you could try £Poundstretchers, if you have one in your town, they are doing 20 blue LED lights on 3V, for only £3 they work fine in a tank of that depth!

Will they be safe for fish tank use though? Not necessarily in the water of course, but our tank only has condensation trays on it and then T5 lighting on brackets, so they'd have to be fairly safe. Also, the ones on Ebay are 12v, does that mean the 3v ones will be a lot weaker/duller? It's a bloomin' big tank, you see. :/

Mind you, safety wise, I could always install them inside the T5 unit, behind the clear plastic shield. But would that light up more of my living room than tank?

You'll have to excuse me - I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to DIY (being a woman and all) :p

Ok, after reading the moonlight pinned thread, I've decided to go the easy option and buy the two cold cathode light set from Razor....my last question being - it says on there it's enough to light up a 6ft tank, but has anyone actually bought these for a big tank - and if so, what did you think? I read elsewhere that someone used 3 lights, but obviously that was a DIY thing, and me + DIY = not a good plan. Plus it works out pricier than having someone do it for me :hey:

Soooo....will they do for a 6' x 2' x 2' tank?

They can kickout a lot of light at 12V..

I run 2x 12" blue at 6v over a couple of 3 ft tanks...

Up the voltage and spred the tubes apart and they will easily light a 6ft ;)

yep the will be safe. no 3v wont be any less bright than 12v. that does depend on how they are wired, and the design voltage of the led. and will be safer than a 12v 620v inverter falling in the tank lol. but two twelve inch cold cathode tubes at 9v should do the trick, i have one 12 inch on my 4x2 tank at 9v and it works a treat.
