Leaving A Tank?

Tank in our classroom has 2 goldfish in it..big tank also with a filter. I put the fish in the pond at the end of every year and get 2 new ones in September. This is figuring if they have survived 12 months with 4 year old kids peering at them they deserve to go in my pond This year we bought a bigger tank..now do I jus t empty water out and turn filter off. Or, would you put clean water in and leave filter running...I really dont know what to do for the best....ideas please and suggestions.

If the smaller tank has gravel then transfer it over and add half the tank water and filter. Fill the rest with dechlorinated water and the tank is ready to go. If you want to put a bigger filter on at some point then run the new one alongside the old one and 3 weeks later it will have cycled.
