Hi,

I have just noticed one of my F8s "leaning" against a mangrove decoration. I was initially a bit worried that he might be sick but when I put a net in to remove a piece of food, he moved. He's now swimming fine and behaving normal again.

Has anyone else witnessed this behaviour? Or do you think it's part of him trying to find some territory to call his own?

Kev

Could have just been resting. Last night when I got in a turned on my Puffer tank lights to check they where OK and one of my Figure 8's was balanced on a Vallis Leaf!! and the other was sat on top of the filter!

I wouldn't be worried. :good:

Hi Kev

My GSP sits on the bottom of the tank under a cave all curled up looking sad lost his color two minutes later he swims about with his colour back all happy. And my Figure 8 sulks. Puffers do funny things. Just keep an eye on him.

May i ask (while we're on the subject) do all puffers have to be kept in brackish conditions or are some freshwater?
No, not all puffers are brackish. The Tetraodontidae family is quite diverse, some puffers inhabit freshwaters, some brackish, some full marine.

Yeah, Sabby! My Puffer does that too!! Goes all dark them suddenly springs back to life!! It always worried me when they go dark because I think there is something wrong!!! Also, one of my Figure 8's sometimes throws 'fits'. He goes absolutley mental, swimming around really fast and trying to jump out of the water. It worries me because I don't think he's doing it for fun, I think he's missing something in the head. It worries me is gonna swim into something or jump into the light. His fits only last about 30 seconds or so.

What size tank do you have your puffer in? Sometimes when they act like that they need more space, try removing some decor and allow more swimming space, or even possibly upgrade tank size.

It's a 17 Gallon and contains the 2 F8's. However, there is a lot of decor and not really much swimming space so i'll play around and see if I can make some room! :good:

Hey! I don't have a F8 puffer, but mine started doing the same thing, losing his bright colors, and swimming slanted, and even lethargic. I got the water tested and found the salt level way to low for him...I have been upping the salt a little at a time and he has come back to his normal cheery predetory self.

How's your water testing out?

Hi Brandx

My Salinity is about 1.008. Will up the salinity a bit when I get my new tank.

One thing Ive noticed over the last couple of years with keeping fish is that 90% of the fish ive had tend to curl up somewhere to sleep, they get very pale coloured and look like they might be dead. Freaked me right the hell out the first few times my 50$ clowns did it, but now Im used to it. Butters my GSP has a favorite cave in the front of the tank he curls up and sleeps in. Sometimes while Im sitting on the computer and turn around to look at the tank Ill catch him taking "naps" in the middle of the day. Its most likely nothing to worry about.
