I know there are a 1000 threads about leaking externals, hopefully you can withstand one more!!!

My Eheim 2228 (which i believe are not made anymore, but very similar to 2028, i.e. Pro2 with x3 trays)

Anyway, has a leak when not powered on

I have it stood in a washing up bowl, if i turn the power off, water in the bowl will rise by about 1 cm in 30 mins

Any immediate idea's as to the problem? I've tried taking it apart and putting it back, same issue

Is as good as gold when turned on! No leak whatsoever.....

at a guess i would say the o-rings need replacing more than likley just one but knowing which one is something only you can know :good:

Whereabouts is it leaking from, can you spot the point/area.

I'm going to have a look actually, not sure when i'll get round to it though, i'm being lazy as its not leaking when turned on, so mostly its not a problem, but be better be proactive and have a look to avoid it perhaps getting worse, will come back to this thread in a few days, i'll set it up on a towel on the floor, make sure its dry, then turn power off and try to ascertain where leak is,

cheers

Sounds like the main o ring (the one one the pump housing which seals with the top of the canister). When the filter is on the impeller draws the water up into the pump housing. As the base of the top section sits around 1 to 2 inches below the top of the canister the water in the canister should never reach the top of canister and the seal.
With the pump off, the syphon action of both the inlet and outlet tries to force water into the canister. This water will force its way between the gap of the canister and pump housing. The seal should stop it when it reaches the top but if the seal is dirty or broken it can leak. Clear as mud?

I would suggest taking the o ring out, cleaning it and smearing it with a little vaseline befor re assembly. This should guarantee a good seal. Alternatively shut the taps for the inlet and outlet off each time you turn the pump off.
Good luck.

Loads do this and it's a common problem of mine, vasoline will help but not stop it, replace the O ring as said already or get a generator ;)

Thanks Alan - easy to get O-Rings then? I dont think they make this model of eheim anymore
