well...this advice is seldom taken or trustworthy buuuut my lfs said that it's fine. They tried to sell me a large chunk while I was buying LR but I figured it would be silly to pay so much for a rock that wouldnt benefit the tank much.
i think i read somewhere that they can have trapped nutrients and the like but im really not at all sure on that. just you dont want to add anything that could release somehting back into the water
Lava rock can be dangerous as it can suddenly release trapped gasses from within it. I suspect it wont be right for a marine tank and you should really stick to calcious based rocks.
Agreed with above. Lava rock is light and many times needs to be affixed. There are multiple large holes, or, high porosity making it easy to collect detritus, create nitrates and possibly, as above, create dead areas. SH
