Hi! I'm setting up a little 5g tank for some african dwarf frogs and was hoping that I could get some advice from experts. I bought my first frog a long time ago and really didn't know anything about keeping aquatic life. Unfortunately, the little guy died(probably from bad water quality) and now that I've gotten some fish experience under my belt I've decided to try to put together another frog tank and this time do it right.
The tank that I'm going to use is an eclipse 5 gallon hex that just finished cycling. I know a tank with a longer footprint would be preferable, but I found this at a garage sale for $5! I'd like to use a thin layer of playsand for substrate and then have a nice piece of rock formation and then maybe some java moss, wisteria or anubias. I have a few really nice pieces of black lava rock that I was using in my brackish tank and was wondering if these would work for the froggies? My biggest concern is that it might be too rough for their skin, but I've read that they like plastic plants which can also be pretty sharp so I wasn't sure how sensitive they are. My gobies loved climbing all over it. If this won't work, I can pick up some slate and use that instead. I'd also like to secure some netting over the filter intake so no arms and legs can get stuck. Do you guys have any suggestions on what kind of netting works best? I was thinking of going to the fabric store and just buying like a yard of undyed fine netted fabric and changing out little pieces every few months to prevent rotting. I could also use pantyhose if that would work better. I was thinking of getting 3-4 frogs. Any advice is welcome! Thanks!
