Hey Guys !

Im Just off to pick up my new 48"x12"x18" from LFS !

Im just wondering as i have liked the look of Cories for a while now ...

While they be ok in this tank ?

It will have some laterite roughly where the plants are going to be planted and then topped of with playsand ?

There is also going to be alot of hiding places ie Bogwood, Halfed Coconut Shells , Slate etc etc !

I just dont know if the laterite would be a problem for them as I have never kept Cories Before !

Could any of you guys reccommend some hardier Cories for me my Ph is around 6.4 and my water is soft everything else is 0 !

I really like the look of Bronzed, Panda and Peppered !

It will be 6 of one of those types i will buy !

If any of you dont think this is a good idea please tell me :D

Thanks alot

Richie !

Pandas are pretty sensitive and not reccomended for a tank under 6 months mature. Bronze and Peppered are usually regarded as more robust.

Edit - Hit enter too soon

As for the laterite the only problem might be that it will mix with the sand and could look unsightly. Other than that it should be fine :)

Ahhhh i see ... i think the sand laterite thing will be ok ! as long as i dont adgitate it too much !

Well i wont be adding them right away and i will be starting off with alot of water from my already mature tanks !

Also will be running a filter in the new tank that has already filled with bacteria along with the external filter i get ;)

Pandas are more expensive arent they ?

I use laterite with sand. The Cories that have had it are fine. Mostly I don't plant my cory tanks, so I just have a thin covering of sand with some wood and Java moss and Java fern. But where I have used laterite it was fine and I saw no problem with the two together asthetically.

What Cories did you get?

I have a layer of laterite, thin layer of 2-4mm pea gravel and then sand ontop of that. That way my cories can forage without disturbing the laterite, and it also should provide something for the plants to anchor to more easily.

Hope that helps!

I use laterite and playsand from argos.. works well.. i have a couple of inches of sand for planting, so the laterite doesn't mix and become unsightly. The only bit you can see are where the BN plec had a good old dig. These bits can just be pushed back down though... As the for the cory's; they love it..

Agree that pandas are sensitive though.. i didn't know this and lost 3 out of 5.. bad me. :( they do love to stick together too.. great fish.

Albino cories are infinitely entertaining you know...

I didnt quite understand your last post, are you running your old filter with your new one for a while? Because that would be the only way to cycle your filter. Using old tank water wont work because the bacteria we like are sessile, meaning they stick to things not float in the water.

Em i think you might find that it works the same as using filter media squeezings ! It worked for me when setting up my first tank ! just took water from my dads tank ! And yes i will be running an all ready matured filter in the tank also !

But i am going to be putting my to bits of mopani from my mature tank in the new tank also !

As im going to rescape my current one and make it a rocky themed tank !

I dont have any Corries as of yet and definately wont be getting any right away ! maybe after around a month or so after the tank has matured a bit !

Thanks for all the replies so far they have all helped

Sorry about the time i took to reply ... i have been at my grans for over a week now how fun lol !

Thanks again

Richie
