Just basically wondering what types of fish out there are possible tank mates for larger fish such as cichlids etc..mid sized for tanks around 5/2/2..just seen alot of threads lately with this question..

Rasbora caudimaculata...greater sissortail...supposed to max around 6-8inches

Striped headstander - Anostomus anostomus...supposed to max around 6-8inches

charax gibbosus-glass headstander..max around 5-6inches

Micralestes interruptus-congo tetra...max around 4-5inches

Abramites hypselonotus- marbled headstander...5-6inches

Metynnis argenteus- maxing around 5-6inches

Metynnis hypsauchen--silver dollar...6inches..but there are alot of sub species so suggest research first, for example

Red Hook Silver Dollar - Myleus rubripinnis max around 8inch, as do Spotted Silver Dollar (Metynnis lippincottianus

Hyphessobrycon anisitsi -Buenos Aires Tetra...3-4inches

what other things do you know of of the top of you head guys

Good idea!! I often think we should do a section on cookie cutter of fish ideas for standard tank sizes.

There are quite a few more silver dollars other than those you mentioned - like the two spotted species and the black bar.

There are two other annostomus - Annostomus Ternetzi (5 inch max) - Annostomus Tenatious (lisa fish) (7 inches)

Columbian Tetras? Seem to do quite well with larger fish.

Giant Danio and other danio and devario species get between 4-6 inches.

Auralis Barb (5-8 inches)

Yellow tailed congo tetra - same as normal congos but yellow tailed

Most of the larger rainbow fish depending on just how aggressive the other fish are and their diet and water quality requirements are met.

errrmmm running out of ideas now but sure there are more.

oh no wait

blind cave tetras heard of them doing reasonably well with cichlids

and when you start to get to a bit bigger than you stated I guess there are all the Datanoides that people mix with them but then again I would consider them more a feature fish rather than a dither kind of placement lol.

Also smaller cichlids can sometimes work as Ive read about threadfinned acaras living in the wild with cupid cichlids and this pairing works well in decent sized tanks as well. You also hear of people using things like convicts for dithers in big cichlid tanks like dovii etc

Wills.....I think thats it now

One of the odd things about fish in this grouping is that there are a lot that are listed in encyclopedias that look stunning! And would fit in loads of tanks perfectly but the only way your going to get them is if you hook them your self because no where stocks them all sorts that look like big tetras that should be imported over stuff like silver sharks but arnt.

An other group to add to the list - Leporinius I think a few of them stay under 10"
As for catfish a few robust options for the larger tank that people dont always think of.
Hoplo Catfish
Flagtail Catfish
Brochis Catfish - Still cant believe just how huge these adults are
Jaguar Cafish - The true one absolutely stunning fish as adult and between 8-10 inches

Surface wise, maybe african butterfly fish? Im sure there will be a few gars suitable but not sure of the sizes that they come in.

bosemani rainbows, featherfin synodontis ,red tailed black shark ,bichirs ,glass knifefish ( these are soooo cool) , flagtail prochilodus ,

Not sure if mentioned but denison barbs or torpedo barbs as theyre also known get to a decent size and are really quick they max out at something like 6inch i think
