I added 3 Amano shrimp over a year ago, 2 have remained a modest inch in length, whereas the 3rd is 2+ Inch from tail to head.

I have lost a couple of Bronze cory recently, so having assured myself that the water was ok, have just added 2 albino cory. Within 1 hr, i noticed that both fish were barely alive, having been bitten in half. The shrimp still cheewing through the two tails!

I have removed the culprit, but have no spare tank, so he is in a bucket and in need of a new home asap.

Anyone in the Wakefiled area is more than welcome to pick him up for free, other than his fish eating antics, he is a real lively shrip who I love(d) to watch.

an amano shrimp will not attack a fish but will pick from a dead fish. its not the shrimp that are killing your fish

They weren't dead, still swimming, but he was trying to pin them down, then hacking more bits off them, he seems to have some character flaws.

are you sure its an amano shrimp?

As mattlee says it`s highly unlikely to be the shrimp that`s the culprit. What other fish etc do you have in your tank and would you be able to post a pic of the shrimp?

Pets at home said he was, so I guess he must be

He was bigger than the others when I bought him, but has just grown and grown, his front claws must 6 cm long.

photo shows a 5p for scale.

Thanks

cant see pic but if it has claws then its not an amano shrimp im affraid

Thats what the other two shrimps look like, but on closer inspection, this big shrimp is entirely different. not small and cute looking, but big and aggressive looking. the lost fish over the last 18 months is all starting to make sense now.

I will try and upload picture again in my next post

Also was it claw... or claws? He could be part of the Macrobrachium genus.... there are some in there that stay relatively small but males have a big claw and I can see how they could be mistaken for amanos when young.

Or some sort of crayfish...

what you have is a Red Claw Macro Shrimp, they can be nasty buggers at the best of times

I do believe you are right - I have just googled it and the pictures look about right.

2 big claws

although the clwas look dark, rather than red

Google 'Macrobrachium' and look through images? See if you can find it that way..? Though chances are it is one of the more common ones like the red claw macro shrimp beth k suggested.

Thanks to you all for your help, wish I could succesfully upload a picture though. Looking at the images for Macrobrachium, I can confirm that this is definitely what I have, the red version as suggested looking the most like, but without the red tinge to the claws.

I will add a new post for a free Macrobrachium. :good:
