Hi,

I have a 7 (UK) gal goldfish tank, and the lamp fitting has just gone.

I changed the bulb and it didnt help. The filter still works, so its not a fuse etc in the mains.

My question is: is this something I could potentially fix on my own? Im guessing its a circutry problem somewhere.

Assuming it will cost too much to get repaired (the tank only cost £50), what are you thoughts on external lighting, e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Free-Angle-Aquarium-...86.c0.m14.l1318 and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Free-Angle-Aquarium-...86.c0.m14.l1318

Could be the light starter unit perhaps? You paid £50 for a 7 gallon tank? Seriously? And no offence, but 7 gal isn't remotely big enough for any goldfish in existance, not even a baby one. You'll need to upgrade to at least a 30 gallon very soon.

Anyway, if you know anyone else with a tank, ask if you can borrow their light starter unit for a little bit, and if it works then you'll know it's your unit and not the bulb. Sometimes the little holes inside the endcaps ( where the two prongs of each end of the light fit into) deteriorate with time and if any water or moisture gets in there, so if they look rusty or even blackened, you need a new one.
