I importer has 7 of these beauties available for $750. I am trying to bargain him down to $500 for he can’t get ride of them. They are fully grown adults and there are 5 males and 2 females. I know not really good breeding ratios.
I have got a 70gal tank that I want to dedicate to breeding them. Will this ratio cause a problem? Also planetcatfish don’t give a good breeding report, does anyone have one on this specie of any experience with them. But they do mention that they are territorial, will this be a problem? Should I add a huge amount of wood and plants to help stop this problem? These fish aren’t very common on the market in New Zealand, and they are over priced dearly but if I can ill get them.

This is them.

We have an L205 but I can't give you any info on breeding.
At the moment he's in a 40UK Gallon tank with 4 other Plecos, shortly to be moved to a 120UK Gallon tank. I haven't found him to be particularly territorial although he does like a certain spot in the tank. If another Pleco comes near him he'll pop out of his hole but is not aggressive in anyway.
We feed him algae wafers, mussels and bloodworm.
Our tank has quite a few hiding places but he isn't particularly shy. He is quite a lazy beggar though!

Here he is:

Thanks for your reply. I have heard they are aggressive with their own species.

Will my breeding ratio be a problem? I mean I wish I could just have an extra female.

I'm really not sure, I'm afraid. Unfortunately we haven't found out too much information on this species. We only brought him because my partner felt sorry for him. He'd been in the lfs for over 8 months and nobody wanted him so they reduced the price and still couldn't sell him! My other half took pity and I must admit we don't regret buying him at all.
You could try a google search but when I had a look I couldn't find a lot of info. :/

Thanks for your help!
Sorry I couldn't help more.
I've just looked on planetcatfish and they say that they are a good community fish which is easy to breed. So maybe they will all be ok in a big enough tank?

But they said that they are territorial, and I have 5 males and only 2 females :(
I wish the ratios where the other way round.

Is there any way the importer will sell you the ratio you want? How much are they to buy individually?

He only has and had 7
He won’t sell them individually, must go as a group.
These are a really rare import, but sadly no one has purchased them, because of the price.

I know you've probably already thought of it but couldn't you buy them and sell the ones you don't want? I don't know how rare they are here but ours was originally marked up for £80.

Maybe I don’t know, I am offering $500 for them, my MAX will be $580 so if he accepts that will be great.

Thanks for all your help, you have been the only one to reply so cheers.

Can I ask is their anything I should know about this fish?

Well ours is about 5-6 inches and we don't think he's going to get any bigger.
He has his own little spot in a cave and likes to burrow in the sand and gravel, in fact he makes quite a mess with it! He does pop out of his hole to chase other Plecos that come near his "home" but isn't aggressive towards them in any way.
He's not very active during the day but at night he'll attatch himself to the front of the tank which is great to watch. He doesn't particularly hide himself away and he doesn't mind the lights being on.
We feed him mainly algae wafers and cucumber which he loves.
The PH in our tank is a little over 7 which seems ok for him.
He can be incredibly docile and many a time our Pictus catfish have practically sat on him and he's not bothered by it at all!
I can't think of much else to tell you, only that we love him to bits!
