trying to find a smallish plec for my 29g and I happened on these guys but they've got me completely confused. Planetcatfish has two L200 plecs, Hemiancistrus subviridis, and Baryancistrus demantoides. The ones I'm looking at on aquabid aren't specified as one or the other, only marked as L200 Green Phantoms Ancistrinae sp.

My tank is 30x12 so I don't think I want a fish that gets over 6 inches, but here's where things get confusing. The one species gets a bit over 7 inches, the other a bit over 5 inches, according to Planetcatfish, and I think I saw KathyM say they get 10 inches when I tried doing a forum search! I'm completely baffled now.

I'm not even sure if a 29g would be appropriate for one of these fish regardless of which size it gets but if any of you could clear things up for me I'd be forever grateful!

listen to PC, the 10 inches you quote is wrong.

do you have a link to the auction with pictures, may be able to tell which is which, the bary (imo) is a prettier fish with its 'hi-fin', nicer colouration a fused adipose and dorsal fin

thats the hemi, at least the ones i can see the dorsal/adipose of, and the rest by coluration are the same.

be warned: the L200 is quite shy. don't expect to see much of it.

i used to have 3 and the only time i used to see them was when they were squabbling over territory.

my experience (and many other plecofans) is completely the opposite, my L200 (bary) was one of my most active L's

it could just be the frame of reference. my only other plecs were a common and a bristlenose, so the L200s seemed to be rather shy. they were definitely more shy than any other fish that i owned, including my badis.
