Hi all just a quick question i know these are exspensive and i know they are hard to get hold so thats out the way first lol.

All i was wondering is how many eggs do they lay and what would you expect fry wise in numbers, you see im planning on getting a breeding pair if i can source them and it wont be for a few weeks yet but i need to know the basic care and rearing of the young first any infomation would be gladly appreciated. :good:

every ones dream plec you will be lucky to get a pair as no one is willing to part with them

Price wise can be 100 quid and above and thats for small juvvies and then takes a few years for them to become sexually mature

if you thinking of getting some you will need to get a group to make sure you get a good male female ratio as when people sell them you carnt sex them

if you search the plec part of the forum for L046 you will see how many people post about wanting them

Cheers Dane

Agree with Dane, unless you are extremely lucky there's almost no chance of getting a breeding pair. Even if you were to find someone willing to sell you a breeding pair then anything from £500 quid and up into the thousands wouldn't be an unsurprising price to be quoted.
While people have been succesful with just 2 zebras, for the most part people generally keep them in groups of 5 and upwards. Females for one reason or another are harder to get hold of (sexing often isn't easy even when adult either), which is one of the reasons why people aim for a group rather than just two.

At present demand totally outstrips supply and it will be that way for the forseeable future. So if your intent on buying some for the aim of breeding them and for which you'll preferably need different bloodlines then you'll need to keep a constant eye on aquarists classifieds, ebay, zebrapleco.com etc or find a couple of breeders who have stock for sale, or be prepared to pay the vastly inflated prices in the few lfs's that have them. You'll also need to be prepared to travel.
That isn't to say they are too difficult to get hold of though it just isn't quite a simple as your initial post implies.

As for the number of eggs laid in a spawn it varies but is rarely over twenty, quite low considering and this is also reflected in the price. But in all honesty you'll more than likely have many more questions that you'll need to ask before you need to be asking any questions about raising fry. Getting them to spawn in the first place is fairly difficult, after that it's easy.

That's ok stiffler, it was a pleasure to help use up the small amount of spare time I have each week in answering your question only for you to totally ignore it and not even bother to say thanks afterwards...

I don't know what it is about this forum but I have never before been on a forum where so many of the members seem to be lacking the basic manners to actually go into a thread they've set-up and leave a 'thank you' reply to all those that answered.

Hi really sorry i actually did reply with a thanks to this and its gone maybe i had a problem with my net just as i posted because i did actually reply and say thanks.

Once again im really sorry and really am appreciative of your help and honestly though i did reply.

Thanks again for the help darkstar and dane

Cheers :good:

fair enough mate, while you got the bite as it were you weren't the only one...I just kinda snapped once I got to yours. But it does amaze me how many people don't bother to say thanks here....and not just in the Loricariid forum, all of them.

This is the only forum I have ever been to where I've sent malaysian trumpet snails to people free of charge after they have requested some off me...I've offered them free, I've paid the postage and then I've had to pm them a week later to find out if they got them or not. It never even occured to them to perhaps send me a free pm (no postage required) and say thanks...and frankly that pi**es me right off.

Anyway, you're off the hook now lol...so no worries and I hope my answer helped.

Darkstar.

There is an ad in the classified section of zebrapleco.com for a group of 18 breeding zebras available in the UK. He wont ship to the USA or I would already own them.

They have small spawns 12-15 eggs is typical. Not all may be viable. You will need to raise the fry for about 6 months until they get over an inch before they can be sold safely.

The best bet is to let the dad take care of the eggs and then release the fry into the tank from the cave.

i just found this on ebay a bit shocked.

What's shocking about it? They're quite often for sale on ebay if you keep your eye out and it won't sell for that price as the reserve hasn't even been met yet.

My eyes are peeled for a decent pair once back to work in a few weeks ill be laying down some top coin for some so please keep the info coming with regards to the care and thanks for the replys upto now.

You'll find some extremely helpful people on there who will give you great advice!
