Are kuhli loaches considered "oddballs?" I have one and I love him, he's adorable! I have heard that they can tell when there's going to be a storm. Is this true? One time he was swimming around at the surface of the tank, which seems very unusual. That afternoon, there was a thunder storm. Just a coincidence, or could he actually tell what the weather was going to be? :p

Pretty sure its a kuhli loach. Its about three inches long with dark brown (almost black) and orange stripes. Do weather loaches look similar? Also, that was actually a different fish, and I got it from a not very reliable source(Scamp's pet shop) so they may have identified it wrong. Also, I have heard that they do better if there are more of them in the tank. Should I get another?

that sounds like a kuhli loach, weather loaches look entirely different. I personally would buy more, since they just occupy the bottom of the tank only you really dont have to worry much about overcrowding your tank. At least get 3 more. Mine all like to snuggle up and it looks like they are going to get tangled and end up in a knot ;)
They like to have places to hide. I gave mine a coconut shell i bought in the reptile section at petsmart.

I saw some khulis today at my LFS, they were just too cute but I never knew they were so tiny...so so tiny, they wouldn't last long in either of my tanks -_- (but I'm still debating on setting up a 10 gallon just for them) ;)

Ok. Just one more thing. Will my other fish be ok with more loaches?

Other fish:
2 corys
2 reg wag platies
3 Congo tetras
1 molly
2 rummy nose tetras
several other tetras

Does anyone have any info on breeding kuhli loaches?
its been done only a very VERY few times, reportedly in very heavily planted tanks.

Guess who has? ;)

Strange as it may be their egg's are layed scattered among the roots or stems of floating vegetation. The egg's are green and very hard to see mixed in with the plants. My Kuhli's where 4 year olds and warmer water can trigger them to spawn.

Graeme.

for info on breeding khulis pop along to khuli info

They lay green eggs, they need floating plants in which they lay thier eggs, which will then fall dwon into the tank gravel. These eggs are green in color. Breeding is difficult but they have been spawned in aquariums. Breeders use large shallow vats to spawn them.

The fish you have in your tank will be ok with them, the only exceptions are for small carnivious fish like banjo cats, and doras and the like. As they will find lunch easily form them. You are right in thinking they need company, they do better in large groups. I have over 40 now in my tank at home and still looking for more for my tanks here. ( currently have 5 khulis here, long story)

If you really want to breed them then a 2f tank setup just for them would be ideal for a small breeding programe, if you are lucky enough to get them to breed.

Hope this helps, dont forget i have this info on both my website and on the fish index here. any questions just ask away.
