Can a Kuhli Loach make out in a tank with gravel substrate if there're enough hiding places? I know they prefer sand or finer substrate, but can they live with gravel?

i've only had mine for a couple of months now, but they seem to do ok in my tank with a medium gravel substrate - they spend most of their time tied up in the stalks and roots of my plants though, but occasionally stray out into the open

I don't have them now but did a few years ago and they did fine with gravel - always busy tying themselves up in knots !! enjoy :shifty:

I think they appreciate sand more though; when i bought my khuli loaches they came from a tank with gravel in it but when they arived in my main tank which is sand based they livened up alot more and seem to enjoy filtering through it- its pretty cool cos you can see the sand they filter coming out of their gills like with corys and im sure it helps keep them healthier and happier.

It is not so much a question of is it possible, the answer is obviously yes. People do. Is it desirable? Probably not.

Given plenty of good hiding places they will survive on a gravel base, but that they will never be as happy as they would on a fine substrate is somewhat inevitable.
