Hi there,

Just set up a bigger tank, 120 litres with an undergravel filter setup. Been cycled and all water quality splendid. Temperature is 74. Have many plants and ornaments
Ok fish stock.
1- Kribensis
6 zebra danios
3 female guppies
6 male guppies
8 adult platties
10 juvenile platties
1 chained sucking loach
1 female molly

Went to shop on Sunday at bought three females to keep the male guppies happy. Was gonna get a male molly but shop told me that mollies should not be put in water without salt. Was convinced by them to opt for a kribensis,m as they are full of character and intelligent. I was happy to go for their option. I wnated a pair but they only had a male.

Noticed that when added the Kribensis was being a bit stealthy and hidin and then pouncing on the juvinile platties. The kribensis and the loach dont like each other and the loach chases the kribensis around a bit.
To get to the point! Come home from work and now have two male platties without their beautiful fins, one platty that is swimming like his head is stuck at a 45 degree angle to his body and laying on the floor a lot, a missing guppy and a further dead platty that had somehow wedged its head under an ornament! (I swear it wasnt me!) I watched the kribensis and saw him have a pounce at a danio too , who has a red flesh wound on his shoulder region.
I have taken the kribensis out and isolated him in a seperate tank. Is he definately the cause?
Will the fins grow back?
Whats up with my platty?
Can you suggest some fancy active fish that will live happily with my existing fish?
I want a couple of larger feature fish too. Any ideas? Thanks.

Mollies don't need to be in salt water, shouldn't have salt in with a loach anyway, the guppy at an angle and laying on the floor dosn't sound good, can it maintain it's balance in the water, what do you feed the fish, is it bloated looking, red patch on the danio was if definetely caused by the krib if so you will need to add abit of melafix to the tank.

The platty is not openly swimming at the moment. Cant see him. He was swimming and feeding but seemed to find it hard keeping boyancy.
CURRENTLY FEEDING THEM NUTRAFIN COMPLETE FLAKE FOOD.
Everything Ive read suggests Mollies are fine in normal water and as you suggest also no salt is required. I think perhaps the shop salesman was on a Krbensis bonus incentive or something!!
So do you think the Krib ate the fins on the guppies? It happened within my working day.
I cant be sure with th Danios. I have had them from the dawn of my fish keeping. They are soi hardy, maybe he had a brush with the heater? I havent noticed a gradual sore on him getting worse, it just suddenly appeared on him.
I think il;l take the krib back and get a male molly as I first intended.
One of the guppys which has very little of his fins left is swimming forlornly at the surface. I think he wont last the night

Sounds like to me you have a very bad bacterial infection in your tank, feed a more varied diet of frozen foods and veg, as to many dried foods can lead to constipation and swimlbadder, i would medicate the tank with anti internal bacteria med, as you have swim bladder finrot, sores can be ulcers developing.

are you suggesting that within 8 hours my fish have developed a severe case of fin rot removing all their fins, a swim bladder infection and an ulcer? surely symptons would have appeared before then. i only got problems when i added the krib. so are you saying the krib is blameless?

Open sores and swim bladder are bacterial deseases, the finrot yes it had happen that fast, i don't no if the krib has been nipping at the fins, but livebearers are very prone to bacterial finrot, plus you need a bacteria med for the sores, swimbladder try some shelled peas but there is no cure once the desease has progressed, have you seen the krib bully them.

The krib was hiding in amongst the plants and pouncing on anything that passed.
iT was also like a cat crawling up to the juvenile platties and then pouncing on them. I admire its stealth! I also saw it pounce on a danio.

If the platy is incurable is it suffering currently? I would not like it to suffer until it dies Id rather put it out of its misery.

iLl definately get some meds though! Cheers

I would rehome the krib, swimbladder is the fish turning up side down yet, the sore is it a raw looking red or pink, the fins should heal as long as they not eaten down to the base.

scotty, i have kribs and YES fish being horribly abused and beaten is a bad sign. remove the krib immediately to a isolation tank (if you haven't already).

if you saw no signs of damage prior to adding the krib and all of a sudden you have ruined fins and ulcers--its almost definitely wounds from fighting. clean water and a gentle antibacterial like melafix will do wonders. be sure to add an airstone if you add any meds, as they reduce dissolved oxygen levels.

--EDIT--
don't get any new fish and try 10% water changes for a few days. if you still see no signs of improvement, then add meds. antibacterial meds will sometimes interfere with your nitrogen cycle, so i'm hesitant to just recommend their use willy-nilly. if you're dead-set to add something, i suggest you investigate collodial silver first (wuvmybettas swears by it)

The swimbladder fish has just made a n appearance and is swimming in open water jerkily and having bursts then sinking. The danio has a red mark on the shoulder with pinkish surround which extends up onto his back and is whitish. Is it possible I could have inflicted this when catching and transfering him?
The guppys tail fins are not down to base but the top fins are! Oh dear!

Thanks for your advice by the way!

Watch out for infection with the sore, as he has lost his protection, he has an opening now to fungus or bacterial infection, keep water in tip top condition and same as the above reply add some melafix.

Cheers. I was getting worried that everything was gonna be dead by morning! Ive goit the krib out and put him in a tank all on his own. Hes not happy. Its almost as if he knows hes been a bad bad boy! Pity as a great looking fish with great character! May have to start up a specis tank some time!
Will get the melafix and hopefully that will help them all. Thanks for your help.
