USA,
when do the females start to develop the red stomachs? Like what size?

I have one that is 2" long and has a lovely pink tummy and thats 2" at most, so possibly smaller.

Jon

aw, i thought my little one was getting red on her, it must have just be a reflectin from the pots.

they need that red to breed though, right?

Sorry I think you misunderstood, Mine have the pink glow and are only 2", but thats the size I got them, so they may go pink earlier. How big are yours?

[EDIT: Just had a look at one of my books and it states... Breeds at 2".. 8 Months old... may be conditioned on bloodworm and daphinia]

Jon

oh, that would be nice, lol. but i dont even think that they like eachother. nor do i think that theyve paired up. And i didnt condition them either, i neve knew you had to. Only thought it was bettas. and isnt 1 inch to small?

the female will develop the red belly from a good diet and good water quality.
and 1 inch isn't too small for the female, but the male needs to be larger, maybe 2 1/2 inches to withstand the volatile temperament of the female.

i checked her out 1 minute ago, and she is gettin red! id hope theyde breed soon. the male is 2.5 inchs exact. but the only think is there are corries in the tank. i dont want them to hurt them in anyway if they breed.

I had some (not a lot) of my 4 month old fry already displaying a pinkish belly. I just sold 45 of them to a LFS on Saturday and still have 20 left from that brood.

   (not to be taken as rude ;) )

Don't get your hopes up on getting too much for them. I can get between $1-$2 each, depending on size. Mind you this store typically sells them at $4 each unless they are a nice size and colour. Right now I'm changing my breeding focus to endler's (got 2M/3F from a breeder) and apisto's, cacatuoides in particular. The cacatuoides have always been my goal, but I've only recently acquired them after much searching.

i know, my lfs will give 1 dollar each, but if they have 80-120 babies, and 80 survive, that is $80. Then I use that money to order some nice are rare shellies for my 5.5. Breed them and start to makesome real money, lol.
Btw, i want to have my own store one day and breed all the fish myself, so i want to start now, lol.
