One of my mum's 24 year old koi seems to have dropsy. It has the pinecone effect, but has been like this for about a month and is still eating. She has isolated it in one pond, but has not yet treated. Our local koi center said that it probably wouldnt survive anyway!!! I disagree. The pond is 52" wide x 86" long x 15" deep. The koi probably weighs about 10 lb, it is about 18" long!! Is salt the best treatment? If so, how much? Any advice would be gratefully received.

salt will only help if the kidneys havent been damaged. the fish needs to be put into a tank and the temperature raised for it to have a chance of working. i'm afraid nearly all fish die from this as the pineconing is the advanced stage and usually nothing helps. if by some miracle it gets through it, the chances of the dropsy returning are really high.
i personally too would advise euthenising to stop the fish suffering any more, sorry. :-(
