Ive recently bought a second hand 180 Juwel tank for my kois, they were living in a cramped 80l tank and I ran 2 x internal filters.

However since the upgrade I have been meaning to fit a Rena XP3 which was sold as part of the deal.

The tank is currently less than 3/4 full and housing the 2 x tetratec internal filters and I do a weekly water change and give the filter media a nice squeeze in the tank water.

My question is what type of filters do you guys run?

My kois are around 5 inches big now and bearing in mind been living (somewhat happily) in the smaller 80l tank.

Ive already got some Eheim Lava type rock to put in the Rena XP3 as well as some sponges, but would bio balls benefit the filter? or just put in standard course and fine filter pads?

Most people wont be able to tell you what sized filter they use as there are very very few people with Koi in tanks.

However going by goldfish I would say filtration suitable for a 360l tank is the very least you would need.
And yes bioballs would be useful if they will fit.

Oh by the way, just to check, these are going into a pond as they grow?

Yes the idea is that they are housed in the 180 for the time being and next year I am going to buy a house with a garden which will be sectioned off for a Koi pond thats around 6 foot by 3 foot big.

Im just curious for the time being as I am abviously asking for their well being.

hi there.
i have kept koi in tanks for a few years though only to grow on till they can go into the main pond.
They are fast growers and extremely good at dirtying up their water.
i use as big an external filter as i can and loads of air.
I dont putany gravel in the tank as it harbours so much detritus and then causes water quality problems.
The filer needs regular cleaning though don't over do it as it will knock back the good bacteria.
Also keep a close eye on the ammonia/nitrite and ph.and do regular water changes with conditioned water.
Hope this helps.
koi also devour any plant life that is put in so it isnt really worth buying plants for the tank

I have 5 koi in a Juwel 300l tank, I run a aqua pro 4 external filter with sponge in one section, mid section with bio media in and the top section filter wool. I also run a juwel internal filter.
