Hello all:

I just bought some very nice Knight Gobies and my LFS told me I'll need Rock Salt etc. Before I add them into my tanks, I have a question for you all. Cories don't like salt at all and my friend has Gobies with 100% freshwater without any issues. Also, my friend said I'll be ok without adding some salt. Is this true? Cories are over one year old and I don't want to lose them (any fish). I rather take back the Knight Gobies instead. Any feedback here will help (sorry for not researching this more).

Knight gobies are brackish, and will have a shortened and unhealthy life if kept in FW.

Your friend could have one of many fresh water gobies,
Candy striped gobies, peacock gudgeons, emperor gudgeons, Mogurnda species, and desert gobies are all freshwater gobies ;)

Not rock salt. Marine salt.
Knight gobies are, as Dwarfs said, brackish fish and MUST have a proper brackish enviroment to survive.
In the wild they are found right ito full seawater.

Now read this thread about cories and salt:

Sorry, knight gobies are lovely, but I think you need to take them back. :/

Thanks for the reply. I'll take them back tomorrow. They should be ok in the tanks until then. My bad for not researching this. They are very cool looking fish and I'm good about reading up before buying. Not this time tho. :/

if you can track any down i'd highly reccomend candy stripes, i picked up a pair a couple of months ago and have them in a brackish setup, but from what ive read they should do fine in freshwater too. they are real characters - much more so than my knight gobies, and probably more than my bumblebees too - and absolutely great to watch. they've taken to digging out caves in the sand under the rocks in the tank, quite often all you will see is a head poking out from underneath! they are also greedy little buggers when it comes to feeding time!!

Do you have any pictures? I've been looking for candy stripes for the past 6 months  :p

i dont have any pics at the moment, but am getting a camera phone later this week and will post some pics.
Believe me they are worth the wait when you do find them, other than my one-eyed figure 8 they are my favourite of all my fish i think. real grumpy looking faces, loads of character, and always seem to be up to something....

So are my current gobies (Peacocks, mogurnda), always looking for food or acting suspiciously :shifty: I'm keeping some space open in my 30g mini oddball tank, hopefully I can find some of these gobies :)

i cut some salmon up into small cubes for my puffers the other week, one of the candy stripes swiped a piece pretty much the size of his head and managed to get the whole lot in his mouth!! looked for all the world like he was gonna get it stuck in his mouth and choke, so i was starting to panic. but the greedy git took about 45 minutes and slowly managed to chew the lot up without spitting it out once! i've made sure that any food pieces i put in are a lot smaller now!!

the guy in the shop said they get them in regularly from one of their suppliers, might be worth a call to see if they will mail order? they packed them in polystyrene boxes in oxygenated bags for me as i had to get them from cardiff to devon the following day. :D its the same place i got my golden nuggets for just over a fiver each - got my gf to bring them back from uni on the train all boxed up for me!! address and tel no below.
