i see no reason they should be not safe. I've googled to no avail.

i have 200 peices here that fit together to make perfect round spheres all of them all filled with holes and notches and whatnot... they are the closest things ive ever seen to bio balls ever... same shape same size almost the same density... so physically they are fine...

But are they safe... cause i even have enough for a moving bed filter addon.

as long as they are free of chemicals then they should be fine to use. I have used Lego and various other plastic objects as filter media and had no problems. If they are dirty then wash them down with soapy water and then rinse really well before use.

i thought as much... they are listed as food safe plastics just like legos and the likes. and obviously ide rinse them all down in very hot water to remove any anything that has been building up on them for the last 15 years they have been in the basement. granted right now i dont really have to, i told someone else that my lfs did not have bio balls on stock and were THREE WEEKS from getting them back, he had a 5 gallon drum of nano balls (the red ones for the reef cubes) and hed let me take what i needed

But this is good to know that i can do that if i have to again in the future. thank you!

I never would of thought of that! I've got like 100lbs of Knex's and 50lbs of legos.....

If your kid ever had kne'x they have these two flat blue connectors about the size of half dollars, and you can turn them perpendicular to one another and slide them into a central notch making them into a sphere a bit smaller then a golf ball. all full of holes and everything. i should take pictures, but after assembling something like 80 of them, i used really small connectors and turned all the balls into a single rigid grid optimized for air flow and water flow. even tho i have the bio balls now im still REALLY tempted to take them out slide this single peice unit into the wet/dry and see how it goes. theres so much beneficial bacteria between my refugium / sump and inside the rest of the wet dry that i could seemlessly remove any componenent for any time period without effecting the display tank...

I sense a much greater project beggining here...

be on the 6 oclock news as the first person to ever fully construct a functional aquarium with nothing but kne'x and hope.

That would be awesome! I was a big lego and Knex fan as a kid, me and my brother would make whole amusement parks. You know, those gigantic rollercosters and ferris wheels that take up the whole room.

They make clear legos, I wonder if you could successfully silicon them together to make....... say a 10gal tank. You could even make a fused HOB chamber to the tank. Those Knex motors could some how power a impeller.

Either way its certainly do-able. The biggest challenge would be making it water tight. BTW those lego battleships are ssssooooo NOT water tight, they sink like the Titanic.
