Hi everyone,

I am new to this site. I am in the process of setting up my dream tank. I was wondering what water conditions and tank landscaping that i should acheive to make angelfish thrive. I want to get a bunch of high quality kio angelfish once my tank is ready. Is there a popular breeder i should contact for these fish as well?

Thanks to all :) ,

Mike

The first thing to do is buy a tank that's large enough for angels. It needs to be, at the very least, a 30 gallon tall. However, this is only large enough for a single pair so it would be better to look for something around 55 gallons.

Secondly, you need to cycle this tank. That is, you need to fishless cycle it. Check the link(s) in my signature for mroe info. and ask if you have any questions.

In terms of parameters, do you know what your water's pH/hardness are? Regardless, I wouldn't touch these things as there are many things that could go wrong and angels normaly do great under pretty much any conditions - they'll breed happily as well.

The number of angels you get will depend on your tank's size but, ultimately, if you want to get some breeding pairs, you'll need to get a larger group and return the 'extra' fish ocne pairs form seeing as angels can't be sexed when young.

For mroe info. on ideal angel conditions and tankmates, I'd suggest you ask in the New World cichlids section of the forums. Also, make sure you take care when selecting tankmates - things like neons are popular companions but they'll get eaten. Similarly, avoid fish that compete for territory like other cichlids or gouramies.

Thank you for your help. I already have my tank. 135 gallon. Is ten to twelve fish okay? :)

By ten or twelve fish I think you mean angels. Yes they will be fine, Try to get your angels all at the same size as they tend to get more agressive when their bigger.

Are you UK or US?
The tank must be at least 18 inches deep. Ive never had much success with Koi angels as they always died so I wish you luck.
You could try your local store and ask if they can get the angels for you. So from all those fish are you planning on keeping just one or two pairs and selling on the rest?
Tolak is the best member here on breeding but i just left mine to it and they spawned on the filter.

I am from Maryland in the US. My tank measures 24" deep 18" wide and 72" long. You scare me by saying you have had problems with the kio angelfish dying on you. I always loved angelfish and really wanted to set up a large tank with them. The kio colored ones are my favorite ones and hopefully i won't have problems keeping them. I want to have a group of them. I wasn't interested in just having one or two pairs.

Thanks for your input and references.
Mike

If you have a group of them you will eventually get a pair, especially with 10 or 12. You will probably get a few pairs, but with your tank size this may not be a problem. I keep multiple pairs in 55's & a 65, with enough angels the aggression is spread, similar to many old world cichlids.

Koi angels are really no different from any other, as long as they are properly bred. I have no problem keeping them, but like any other fish too much inbreeding results in a weak fish. Your best bet is looking for a local breeder, or local aquatics club. http://www.angelsplus.com/ Sells some really nice angels at a reasonable price, and is a good guy to deal with. I order from him on a regular basis.

I've heard getting fish from acouple diffrent locations is good, this way the fry are stronger. Maybe try looking for afew on aquabid may not be a bad idea.

I agree as well to go to breeders as you will get strong fish. I got mine from the local pet store after someone else brought them in.

Once you get your koi angels remember to put pics up.

Tolak,

Thank you for your suggestions. I just got done reading your article on breeding angelfish. You seem to be very knowledgable with angelfish. If you don't mind, i will look you up on here for help as more questions arise.
So, you think my tank size and that amount of angelfish should be okay. I just hope that the aggression that you mentioned will be limited due to the tank space. I was going to do a discus tank but i think i like those kio angelfish better plus they are alittle cheaper.
Thanks again,
Mike

Thank you for your suggestion. Also, thank you for your interest in photos of my future fish. Right now i have an empty tank. I need to buy some more equipment and all the internal supplies. ( plants, gravel, fake driftwood etc). Buy a freshwater test kit, test my well water, cycle the tank , then find the fish.

Hopefully all this can be acheived within the next month or so. The coming winter time scares me though with ordering fish from non local areas. Maybe i will luck out and find these fish locally. It does make sense to buy these fish from different breeders if i decide to breed them for better genetics.

Thanks again and i will post pictures when that day finally gets here,
Mike

Don't hesitate to ask for help, that's one of the reasons I hang out here. You are doing one of the best things any aquarist can; planning ahead. :good:

Fish get shipped overnight priority, and with heat packs when it's colder. If there's a real cold snap they will hold off on shipping until it warms up a little.

Buying fish from different breeders is a good idea, the trick is getting the fish to realize they are supposed to pair with fish from a different breeder. Even if they do pair among each other from the same breeder it gives you the opportunity to sex them, and you are then able to switch partners in many cases.

Tolak,

I visited the angelsplus site you suggested. Looks like a good place that i may try out. I want to look at aquabid also once i get closer to the time of purchasing. Can multiple kinds of angelfish be kept together okay? Kios, Marbles, Golds, etc. My guess would be that they can be mixed in the same tank but i figured i'd better ask.

Thanks,
Mike

You sure can keep different strains together. You can breed different strains together as well.

I have been keeping Angel fish for some time now and offer some advice.... ....be prepared for constant breeding when (if) your fish pair off. I have two angels in a Amazon Drift Biotype who breed every two weeks without fail. They typically lay c. 300 eggs, which I have now taken to removing as they then get aggessive with my other fish.

Question: do you have room and time for hundreds of Angle fry every couple of weeks, IMHO Angels are easy to breed and certainly need no encouraging!
