How big do these grow? I'm led to believe that they stay around 4 inches????

How are they as community tank fish?

Would a 3 x 1 x 1 foot tank be suitable to house one of these creatures?

Any help greatfully appreciated! :good:

Usually max out around 6 inches, fine for a community tank but be aware they require a meaty diet. The tank size should be fine as long as he has plenty of hiding places.

I think you're looking at more like 5.5" which in my opinion is only just small enough for 36" x 12" x 12", especially if you wanted tank mates. It's probably do-able. However there are smaller plecs that do max out at more like 3.5" that do look similar...
L340 is the first thing that springs to mind. :)

L340's aren't as easy to get hold of but then again 66's at adult size aren't readily available in shops either, mega clowns will still reach 5 inch TL so not really much difference in size to the average 66.

Tank will be fine size wise, footprint on the 12 inches could be better but because its 3 foot it will be fine :)

Ok that's a great help already.

What sort of fishy pals would be good to add with something such as the L340?

Makes me laugh, all these numbers as fish names are confusing but google is providing to be a godsend lol!

Just to add, I'm just in the mood for a small'ish plec suitable for a 3ft tank once I get it cleaned and cycled. Didn't know you could get plecs so small so I'm a bit lost in all of this as I've always passed them off believing them to be too big for the kind of tank sizes I have.

Everyone I've spoken to with Mega Clowns (L340) have said theirs max at 4"...

They probably do on average but they can get 5 inches, when most people refer to plecs it's SL (standard length) and not TL (total length)

The tail usually will add a good inch onto any SL size with smaller plecs so makes it larger than it really is. Planet catfish have them down at 3.1 inch SL i think?, ive seen plenty that have been over 4.

Saying that there was a shop that had them in last weekend and all of them were 4 inch plus and they went fully grown.

People tend to go by what size there's have gotten by personal experience, ive had them in the past above 4 inch closer to 5 inch so i guess everyone states by own experience.

If you want a smaller option try L129 they, they will only stay max 4 inches lol, nice little plecs aswell :)

I wasn't trying to argue, I'm just saying that I was going by the breeders I'd spoken to when I was thinking of getting a pair. :)

No not at all, i didn't think for one moment you were arguing :), it's like many small hypan species, ive had 260's which are meant to get to as PF states 3.5inch SL ive had many that have reached 5inch SL, same as ive had 46's again PF states 3.1 inch SL i think?, have had a few that have been 5.5 inch TL.

All depends on what you get and what size they grow to. The guides that are around are more an average rather than a potential size.

340s stay small. I would argue that debs get larger, as a general rule, than do 340s. Because most people do not make the distinction between SL/TL, they are pretty much always talking about TL. Also, 66 is far more difficult of a fish to get a hold of currently.
