Ok, a few weeks ago, I had to stop by the fish section to get some ammonia test strips for my goldfish as an emergency (my mom + fish = bad things). While I was in the section browsing, I took a quick glance at the bettas and was very quickly appaled. While some lazy store employee sat around joking with her friends, there were ELEVEN dead bettas on display. Some had been sitting so long the water was brown and they were covered with fuzz. The few survivors were in horrific shape; two were in the advanced stages of dropsy, one was furry with fungus and bleeding from the gills, and the only "healthy" looking one was skinny and sitting at the bottom of the cup unmoving and breathing heavy. I've called Wallmart several times to complain, and avoid shopping there unless its one of those midnight shopping emergencies, so I was appaled to see the fish in such poor condition despite numerous complains. And that woman was just sitting there joking and laughing while they all rotted in cups....
Well, I tend to have outbursts when I'm feeling exceptionally pissed, and out of sheer tired stupidity, I grabbed all eleven dead fish, shoved them in the startled employees arms, and asked her why in the hell she was sitting on her can while the fish in the store were slowly dying horrible deaths. I began ranting about how stores like Wallmart treat lives like products, and how there were promoting animal suffering, and how their irresponsible betta care was giving the wrong impression to the public etc. In other words, I turned into a ranting, raving phsychopath, and they had to call security and have me escorted out of the store. I was banned for several weeks from returning.

I felt pretty embarassed about the outburst, and I think if I wasn't suffering from "overtired college student who had a really crappy week" syndrome, I'd have not made such a fuss. I guessed at the time that the one good thing about this was it drew a large crowd, so maybe a few people caught the gist of what I was saying. However, I went back in a few nights ago out of an urgent need for steering column fluid (its no fun walking uphill in a snowstorm at night, if I may add that), and was pleased to see that there were no dead fish on display, the fish there were all in great shape save for one with the first touches of fin rot showing, and there was a new staffer manning the section who seemed reasonably fish-knowledgable; she was talking these people out of buying a goldfish to keep in their 2 gallon bowl at home. I'm wondering if Wallmart's fear of attracting fundamentalist psychopaths caused them to make a bit of a change.

 This post really cracks me up and brings a smile to my face. Dam crazy animal rights activists.

 Damn us all indeed. Maybe I should freak out at stores more often. Hmm.

As a side note, I also got a free betta at petsmart because I saw one with such bad fin rot he was in nubs. He looked EXACTLY like my betta Tim Armstrong who had recently passed (who happened to have fin rot when I got him), and I broke down crying in the store. It starting drawing a crowd, and when the employees asked what was wrong, all I could do was point at the fish and incoherently babble and cry. They basically handed me the fish, said some reassuring things, and whisked me out the door so no one else would notice what crap shape it was in, methinks.
Positive ending, Tiny Tim as he's been named somehow survived that fin rot and is doing great today ^^ And has some of the most beautiful, long, flowing fins you'll ever see.

Good for you! I just hope you don't get caught going back in!
I *think* I'm allowed back in now, though I avoid the place like the plauge usually because I despise wallmart. However, I was also "kicked out" of a few local malls over pet store issues, and they never managed to enforce it properly. :shifty:

Well don't get arrested or anything but at least they made some changes. Some people are just morally def or at least hard of hearing and a little shout or some tears from time to time can make a difference imo.

Well don't get arrested or anything

But of course. That was said mostly in jest anyways; I can't really afford to get kicked out of EVERY lfs locally or my poor fishies would starve

You could do to them what they do to the bettas, and by that I mean dump a tonne or two of rotting food in there encloser and lock them in, you'll probably get to pleed insainity and only get a few yearsw in jail.

what, that's not ok? :look:

Way to go! Someone has got to speak up  ... sorry it had you booted from the wally place though.

I just got back from Walmart.......... they had all their bettas in closed containers with no air holes. The bettas who have been in the store the longest are in tiny clear plastic dixie cups and atop their lids is a tiny x (the straw hole because they were soda pop lids). :hyper:

The newest arrivals had nice wide bowls.... and zilch holes at all. Lids were tougher plastic like tupperware. :(

Total of about 40 bettas sitting at the bottoms of their cups. Looking stressed IMO.

A young male employee with funky dyed hair seemed to be the guy manning the dept.

So when he wasn't looking I slipped a note -_- atop the bettas that said...."these bettas need to have airholes in their lids because they need to breath the same air we do...... and the tiny x's aren't enough either.

Then I marched  over to customer service and explained what I saw.... one gal behind the desk knew something about fish and also understood the need for the lids to have air holes, she mentions ammonia build up and stress. She said they have it taken care immediately. She thought it already had been taken care of with the new bowls..... I was thanked for letting them know. :flex:

But I also took home one of those let the president of walmart know forms...

I have decided it is time to at least go straight to the top. I am so sick seeing my local walmart not properly caring for the pet fish. It is just so wrong. :/

OK rant is over for now. I will go back later and see if things get changed on the air hole issue. :look:

RW - HUGE HIGH FIVES to you.
You are JUST like me - I have cried in PetSmart several times, but never gotten a free fish out if it. LOL

Anyway - I just wanted to say NICE WORK at WalMart. Sometimes it takes an incident like that, especially one that draws a crowd of people around to make a diff in the store. I bet the folks who witnessed it won't think the same about WalMart ever again, and I bet they cruise up and down the aisles to check out the fishes' well-being, and probably had never done that before.

I'd like to make a HUGE scene every time I see a fishy in poor condition, but I instantly gush - turning into a puddle of tears and can't always seem to get my words out so I usually just point out the sick fish and make my way out of the store. I have YET to see a dead betta in a cup. The first time I see that there will be some major hell raised, I can guarantee you that and everyone in the store will know that I'm pissed. I'm sure my episode will be similar to yours (I can only hope! :flex: )

I'm SO proud of you - that was nothing you should feel bad about or regret, ever. Wouldn't it be fun to just travel around the country in an RV, hitting every WalMart and checking out their fish? That might be something we could suggest to PETA. ;)

between this thread and opcn's in general it's turning out to be an ironic day on the fish forum
