Hi i am new here and i have what you may think is a stupid question???

I have just bought 2 Keyhole Cichlid (Aequidens maronii) and i have been told by a friend that they have been eating his fish and he saw one with a molly in its mouth this Keyhole is about 2inches long.
I am a bit worried by this info as i have a community tank with mollys, tetras, zebras and others
Will this happen when they get bigger mine are about 2 cms in length???

I am not sure that his are the same as mine but i thought i would ask just to be on the same side because if they are i will remove them from the tank

Thanks :/

IME keyholes aren't aggressive at all. But, as with any fish, they will eat what fits in their mouth, including tankmates :)

Ive got 2 Keyholes in my 125 litre and when I introduce anything new to the tank they won't stop hasseling it but it's mostly of of curiosity of the new tank mate. They just follow it around and then after a day they leave it along. Most peaceful Cichlid ive had.

It depends on how fond you are of your tetras. Our keyholes live with tetras and I think they have eaten a tetra or two but we've had stable numbers now for about 6 months.

I've got 4 keyholes and the largest is about 3.5 inches now. I had to move my pygmy cories out of the main tank because 6 became 3 :( I bought 6 more and put them into the endlers tank. Other than that the keyholes live with neons, glowlights, x-rays and platys and they only seem to eat the platy fry.

I had two males and one had to removed as it was constantly chased. Then I moved one into a tank containing albino corydoras and the Keyhole actually eat one of the Corys eyes! I don't think this is typical behavour, but in my experience Rams are more peaceful.

Most fish will eat anything they can get into their mouth.. so if your tetras could potentially fit into the keyholes mouth, they could potentially become food.

:good: thanks for all the replies

i seem to have lost a tetra

but all the other fish i have are to big for the keyholes to eat(i think  )

Cheers
