Hi everyone,
It's me again with another snail question for ya.. I am so sorry if I asked this question already. I can't remember the reply and I can't seem to find where the question was asked..

Is this safe to use Kent's Marine Liquid Calcium in a freshwater, planted, goldfish tank for my snails? I treid to get Snailstrong but they don't sell it anywhere I can find in the US and I can't find anyone in the UK who is allowed to ship it over here.

I tried tums and cuttle bone but they are kind of messy. Someone told me Caltrate, which I tried, but my fish ate it all and the snails literally got none of it. Well, atleast I know my fishes have strong bones! ;)

Was kind of hoping to find something a lil less messy that I could use just to ensure the proper amount
of calcium in my water for my lil guys...

Thanx so much

I used it with no problems, but noticed no difference either, and it's expensive.

Your snails probably have plenty of calcium as it it, so adding it will make no difference. If your really worried about it, I'd add a small chuck of tufa rock or similar rocks used to raise the pH in rift lake cichlid tanks - works out FAR cheaper, is more reliable and does the same thing for your snails :).

thanx so much! Will look into the rocks.. Are they something I can pick up at most LFS?

Thanx again!

Yep :). Even cheaper at some garden centres, but unless you know what your looking for the lfs is best.

Yeah, I agree with three-fingers, go for a rock instead of a supplement; No chance of overdosing by mistake.

You can also pick up some crushed coral gravel and keep some in the filter.

I just called my LFS and they have the tufa rock. I am going to go up there tomorrow or Thursday to pick some up. What sized rock do you think I should get for a 55 gallon tank?

Also, i am hoping to pick up some of the crushed coral gravel but got a real dumb question for ya. I have a Whisper 60 filter. When you say to put the gravel in the filter, you don't mean for me to put in the bio bag with the carbon do you? I just open the filter lid and drop it in the plastic box right? Sorry for the super dumb question.. Am a newbie and just want to make sure I do it right...

thanx so much for the help!

You probably don't want too much rock, it will raise your pH (the 'liquid calcium' does to, but not as stably). Do you know what your pH is now, or KH? To be fairly safe, I'd just get two bit's at or under 10cm. In my 50gal, I have one 10cm bit next to the filter inlet hidden at the back for my snails, but my pH still stays around 6.5  (I have very soft water and a lot of bogwood in the tank).
