I was wondering how much of a task would it be to keep Brook trout or other speices of trout in my out door pond, or even in a cold water tank? I have had luck with stickle backs in the past, but was wondering about keeping trout.

I think trout get pretty big. Iv'e seen a rainbow(I think, I know it was a trout tho) that was cuaght in a lake near me. at least 4 foot.

Maybe Koi for an out door pond or some fancy goldfish for an indoor tank.

How big is ur pond?

They do get big but not 4 feet. World record was only 38 inches and weighed 43 pounds. This was in Canada. Koi get bigger. Trout need more room.

I think my pond is around 120 gallon, I just dug a small one for other coldwater fish other then goldfish/koi. Perhaps I'll go with the stickle backs agian, they were nice looking.

trout need fairly cold water and lots of O2. if your pond heats up in the summer and isnt deep enough or not spring fed, they may get overheated and die (not to mention gulp for air at the surface which is not healthy for them). id stick with sticklebacks.
cheers

I've never kept Trout but I'd hazard a guess that they produce high waste and need a lot of room to swim based on the size they grow to. If you have a 1000+ litre pond with an air pump and water fountain for oxygenation and can afford food for a much bigger fish then I'd give it ago.

I'm an ex-trout farmer with 10 years experience.

Simply they dont do well in garden ponds. So ye sickle back's would be much simpler.
I have seen trout reared in tanks/vats but these have been very large stems, and in cool rooms stop them temp rising to high. As they suffer badly from warm water as do all salmonids.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering what would you suggest feeding the sticklebacks? The first time I kept them I had a hard time feeding them and trying to get them to take to frozen foods. Any suggestions?

just let the mosquito larvae and inverts inhabit the pond. the sticklebacks will do just fine.
cheers
