Keeping Catfish In A 10 Gallon Aquarium?

I have this tank:

And I was going to put in 2 Ghost CatFish, 2 Corydora's, and 2 Silver HatchetFish with a couple of live plants. Would this work?
I have never owned fish before and really dont want em to die the second they come home
Would these tank mates work?

Hi mate; welcome to the forums

First of all, if you don't want the fish to die, you need to cycle the filter to get a good colony of bacteria growing in there that will eat the fish's wastes for you.

All the fish you have mentioned are quite shy, delicate shoalers, and need to be in groups of six or more of their own species, so two of each wouldn't really work, I'm afraid.

But you can sort out a better stocking plan as you're reading up and, hopefully, doing a fishless cycle (it's safer than a fish-in one; there's always a risk that you'll lose fish doing fish-in cycles).

Please, please read the Beginner's Resource materials so you can start by getting your tank cycled before you add any fish.

If you're going to eventually have corydoras, you should put down sand as a substrate, not gravel, which can hurt their barbels and lead to infection.

Hatchetfish generally stay at the top of the tank, so you wouldn't have much in the middle. I'd suggest getting a few male guppies, for color, fun and curiosity.

I just read the resource and was thinking of something else, 3 Honey Gourami's and 2 Zebra Danio's. Would this work instead?

Im not sure about the Gouramis, but the Danios are a schooling fish that need at least 6. And welcome

Try out some of these options.


A 10 gallon tank, while a very cheap option as far as tanks go, are limited in the fish you keep. First, danios are very active swimmers (and can be fin nippers if not kept in the proper numbers or cramped in too small a tank), so these generally require a 30 gallon tank minimum - AT THE VERY LEAST a 2 foot long tank.


I think that the honey gouramis could work in a 10 gallon tank, but couldn't be kept with much else in the tank. Add a few shrimp to the tank with the gouramis and you should be fine.

If you're truly limited to a 10g tank, you should keep smaller fish than gouramis IMO. I'd honestly stick with something small and adaptable, like guppies. They're a lot of fun. Add a few shrimp for interest, and there you go.
